Roger Serving on Balance (B)

On Court Exercises

The exercises identify specific elements of the serve. Do not attempt all exercises at once, but rather, start with the first exercise, and take as much time as needed until you feel comfortable, then progress in sequence to the next one and so forth.

Serve within a box

Find an empty cardboard box, an ideal size being the boxes used to ship cases of tennis balls. Set up on court and warm up your serve, staying within the box from start to finish. Serving within a box reinforces the importance of a good toss. Further, because you will not be able to move forward, the only real source of power will be a centered turn into the hit.

Far too often players lean forward with the toss – and starting off balance guarantees a finish that is off balance – to serve within a box learn to keep your weight on the back foot longer – as does Roger
